คราวเมื่อพระบรมศาสดาทรงประทับอยู่เชตวันมหาวิหารอารามในเวลานั้น ในหมู่บ้านชาวประมงมีบรรดาลูกชายชาวประมง ต่างพากันนำเครื่องมือ ลงเรือพายกันออกไปหาปลาในแม่น้ำ
วันนั้นพวกเด็กๆ ลูกชายชาวประมงทอดแหจับปลาสีทองได้ตัวหนึ่ง
เด็กๆ ชายชาวประมงต่างพากันลิงโลดยินดีกันอย่างมาก เพราะพวกเขาพึ่งฝึกทอดแหหาปลาครั้งแรก ก็ได้ปลาสีทองงดงามตัวใหญ่มาแล้ว
จึงช่วยกันจับปลาสีทองนั้นขึ้นเรือนำมาให้พวกพ่อแม่ของตนได้ดู ปลาสีทองที่พวกลูกชายตนจับมาได้ จึงแสดงความลิงโลดดีใจ แล้วพากันปรึกษาว่า ปลาสีทองตัวสีสีสันสวยสดงดงามเหลืองอร่ามดังทองคำ
พวกเราก็จับปลากันมาเกือบชั่วชีวิต แต่ก็ยังมิเคยจับปลาสีทองเหลืองอร่ามงดงามเช่นนี้เลย
หากพวกเราจะนำปลานี้มาทำกิน ก็เสียดายไม่สมราคาปลาทอง เช่นนั้นพวกเรานำปลาทองนี้ไปถวายพระราชา อาจจะพึงพอใจพระราชทานเงินทองให้พวกเรา มากกว่าที่จะนำปลาทองนี้ไปขายในตลาด
ชาวประมงปรึกษาหารือ กันเป็นที่ตกลงเช่นนั้น จึงนำปลาทองใส่เรือนำไปถวายต่อพระเจ้าปเสนทิโกศล
พระเจ้าปเสนทิโกศลเมื่อทรงเห็นปลาทองเหลืองอร่ามเช่นนั้น ก็แปลกพระทัย เพราะไม่เคยได้เห็นปลาอะไรที่มีสีทองอร่ามเช่นนี้มาก่อน
จึงทรงตรัสถามหมู่อำมาตย์ ราชปุโรหิต ราชบุรุษ ว่ามีใครรู้จักปลาตัวนี้บ้างไหม
เหล่าบรรดาราชบุรุษ อำมาตย์ ราชปุโรหิต ต่างพากันปฏิเสธว่า ไม่รู้จักเลยพระเจ้าข้า
พระเจ้าปเสนทิโกศลจึงนำปลาทองนั้นไปเข้าเฝ้าพระบรมศาสดาสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ณ เชตะวันมหาวิหาร
พร้อมทูลถวายอภิวาท แล้วจึงทรงตรัสถามองค์พระบรมศาสดาว่า ภันเต ภะคะวา ข้าแต่พระบรมศาสดาผู้ประเสริฐ หม่อมฉันได้รับปลาสีทองมาจากชาวประมงนำมาถวาย เพื่อทรงวินิจฉัย ปลาสีทองเหลืองอร่ามตัวนี้มีนามว่า ปลาอะไรพระพุทธเจ้าข้า
พระบรมศาสดา เมื่อได้ทรงทอดพระเนตรเห็นปลาทอง อยู่ในลำเรือจึงได้ทรงตรัสตอบแก่พระเจ้าปเสนทิโกศลไปว่า
ดูกรมหาบพิตร หากพระองค์ต้องการจะทราบว่า ปลาตัวนี้ชื่ออะไร เชนนั้นเราตถาคตจักให้ปลาทองตอบให้มหาบพิตรฟัง
ครั้งแล้วด้วยพุทธานุภาพ จึงทรงตรัสถามปลาทองไปว่า ดูก่อนเดรัจฉาน เจ้ามีนามว่าอะไร
ข้าแต่พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้า หม่อมฉันมีนามว่า กปิละภิกษุ พระพุทธเจ้าข้า
ขณะที่ปลาทองพูดตอบ คำถามถวายแด่พระบรมศาสดาอยู่นั้น กลิ่นปากของปลา เหม็นตลบอบอวลไปทั่วทั้งเชตะวัน
ยังให้เกิดความแปลกใจแก่บรรดาพระราชา และมหาชนหมู่ภิกษุที่ประชุมกันในเชตะวัน ขณะนั้นเป็นอันมาก
พระเจ้าปเสนทิโกศลจึงทูลถามองค์พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าว่า ข้าแต่องค์สมเด็จพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้า เหตุไฉนใยเล่า ปลาทองที่มีสีสันสวยสดงดงามถึงได้มีกลิ่นปากเหม็นเน่าดังซากอสุภะเช่นนี้พระพุทธเจ้าข้า...

Origin of the golden fish with bad breath (Part I)

While Lord Buddha stayed at the Chetawan Temple, in a fishing village, sons of fishermen paddled their boats for fishing in the river.
On that day, the children caught a golden fish.
They were joyfully excited. It was the first time they casted a net to catch fish and they could catch a big golden fish.
So, they took that golden fish onto the boat. Their parents were thrilled to see that beautiful golden fish of which color was like real gold.
They discussed that though they had made a living from fishing all their lives, they had never caught such a beautiful golden fish.
If they would eat that fish, it would not worth such a golden fish. So, they planned to give that fish to the king, because the king may give them more money than they would get from selling that fish in the market.
After discussion and agreement, fishermen took that golden fish onto the boat for giving to the King named Pasentikosol.
When King Pasentikosol saw that golden fish, he felt surprised because he had never seen such golden fish earlier.
Then, the King asked his royal courtiers whether they knew that kind of fish.
All of them denied that they never knew of such fish.
So, King Pasentikosol brought that golden fish to Lord Buddha at the Chetawan Temple.
After paying respect to Lord Buddha, the King said that he got that golden fish from fishermen. The King asked Lord Buddha what the name of that golden fish was.
After seeing the golden fish on the boat, Lord Buddha answered to the King, “if Your Majesty wants to know its name, I will ask this fish to tell you.”
With power of the Buddha, he asked the golden fish, “what is your name?”
That fish answered, “Lord Buddha, my name is Kapila Bhikku, sir.”
While answering the Buddha’s question, that fish mouth stank all over the temple.
That surprised the King, people and monks inside the temple so much.
Consequently, King Pasentikosol asked Lord Buddha, “Lord Buddha, why such a beautiful golden fish has such a bad breath, sir?”
