I came back from Parivasa (the Probation), where I saw many Buddhist
monks undergoing the Probation. That reminds me of our four habits, Nissaya ,which
means shelter - i.e. staying at the foot of the tree, going out for alms gathering,
taking medicine pickled in stale urine, and wearing discarded cloth. All these
are basically the four necessities of life. We depend on these things for our
physical being : But one thing we don't understand and naturally forget is
"Refuge of the mind". We don't understand the refuge of the mind.
The refuge of the mind maintains our mind or what our mind adheres to, which
enable us to live a strong life, not wavering because of restraints, pushes and
pulls of anything.

Very few people know about the power of doing merits and the immense
power that comes with it. Most of the times we are taught to do meritorious
acts but the benefits from such actions are not explained to us.

I have seen and heard for a long time that we chant without translating the words. This may be because of laziness or because it is troublesome to do so. But, it surely is against the ideal. Anybody may have read the sermon saying that the purpose of chanting is to promote growth. Here growth means wisdom. It makes us knowledgeable, mindful and delighted.

Question # 70
I am trying to develop concentration through practicing mindfulness, using breathing technique that Luangpoo teaches his students. While my mind was calm and I was watching the air that I breathed in and out, I suddenly noticed the air entering my body abnormally. It felt like the air was gushing into my body. Then, with the out breath, I saw my head come out simultaneously with the air. It turned around and faced me. All this experience was so vivid; although my eyes were closed, it was like I was seeing a twin sitting next to me. I continued to explore what my life would become without breath.
