Practicing celibacy
July 7, 2021
Practicing celibacy means refraining from sensual pleasure from pictures, tastes, smells, sounds, and touch.
Person who strictly practices celibacy must not be infatuated or reigned by any object, must not become slave of or have desire for any object.
Person who strictly practices celibacy must not be infatuated or reigned by any taste, must not become slave of or have desire for any taste.
Person who strictly practices celibacy must not be infatuated or reigned by any scent, must not become slave of or have desire for any scent.
Person who strictly practices celibacy must not be infatuated or reigned by any sound, must not become slave of or have desire for any sound.
Person who strictly practices celibacy must not be infatuated or reigned by any touch, must not become slave of or have desire for any touch.
An example of person who excellently practiced celibacy is Phra Maha Kassapa, one of the principal disciples of Lord Buddha.
Phra Maha Kassapa’s former name was Pippali and he was born as a son of a Brahmin named Kapila in a village called Mahatittha, in the kingdom of Magadha, present-day India. When he was almost twenty years old, his mother wanted him to get married. He refused because he intended to take care of his parents till their death and would enter monkhood. However, his parents insisted that he get married to maintain their lineage. Therefore, Pippali hired a craftsman to create a golden sculpture of a young girl in red dress with flowers and ornaments. He told his mother that if she could find a woman of this similar features, he would get married with her. His mother told eight Brahmins to search for a woman with those characteristics. When they found a lady named Pattakapilanee, they informed Kapila Brahmin. Both Pippali and Patta did not want to get married. So, they secretly sent their letters to each other to look for a new spouse. However, the messenger changed the letter’s content. As a result, they got married, but they did not have any sexual intercourse like other married couples. They practiced celibacy. When they newly got married, they stayed in different corners of the room. After their parents’ death, they lived separately in different rooms and practiced celibacy.
Ordainment :
One day, Pippali went out to look at his rice field and saw a flock of birds eating earthworms. He asked his servants upon whom the sins of these animals would fall. His servants that he would be the person to get these sins. He felt pity for himself that he would be born in next thousand lives and would still suffer. After returning home, he told his wife that he would become a priest. His wife also wanted to be ordained. They removed their hair and wore clothing of monks. They intended to enter monkhood for attaining arahant. Then, they separated in their different paths. At the moment of their separation, earthquake happened.
Attaining Arahant :
After the seventh day of his ordainment, Phra Maha Kassapa met Lord Buddha while staying at the Pahuputta Pagoda. The Lord Buddha gave him three directives to practice as follows.
1. Phra Maha Kassapa should develop a lively sense of fear and regard towards his fellow monastics regardless of their status, whether they are senior, junior, or in between.
2. Phra Maha Kassapa should attentively listen and practice the teachings or Dharma of the Lord Buddha.
3. Phra Maha Kassapa should live in mindfulness.
After listening, Phra Maha Kassapa attained arahant. Then, he laid down his outer robe for the Buddha to sit. Therefore, the Buddha gave his linen robe to Phra Maha Kassapa. At that moment, the earthquake took place, because it was unprecedented that the Buddha gave his used robe to any disciple. Phra Maha Kassapa felt very impressed while realizing that he was “an heir who was born at the Buddha’s chest, mouth, and the Buddha’s teaching (Dharma), or he was transformed by magic of the Dharma. He was an heir of the Buddha’s Dharma and received the Buddha’s used linen robe.”
In sum, objective of people who practice celibacy is to liberate themselves from object, taste, scent, sound, touch, or namely called the five sensual pleasure, of which their poison, power, and taste would enslave those who have tasted them. They will bind living creatures to be their slaves and these creatures will suffer and will be trapped in these endless cycles.
It is said in the Buddhist scripture that.
The basic step for those who practice celibacy is to observe the five precepts, practice monogamy, and be faithful to one’s spouse.
The second step for those who practice celibacy is to observe the eight precepts, refrain from the five sensual pleasure on the day before the new moon and Buddhist holy days, and practice this regularly.
The highest step for those who practice celibacy is to abstain from object, taste, scent, sound, and touch
Merely see objects without any mental formation
Merely smell some scents without any mental formation
Merely hear sounds without any mental formation
Merely touch things without any mental formation
Practicing self-restraint of one’s eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind at every breath is regarded as the highest level of celibacy practice.
Merits for those who practice each step of celibacy practice are as follows.
Those who practice the first step of celibacy will be born as kings.
Those who practice the second step of celibacy will be born as angels or Brahma.
Those who practice the highest step of celibacy will be born as the great Brahma or attain arahant.
This is the most auspicious factor in one’s life.
