แม้ภิกษุผู้มีศีลสังวร และพระโสธนะเถระผู้พี่ชายที่บรรลุอรหันต์ มาว่ากล่าวตักเตือนมหากปิละผู้เย่อหยิ่ง ยโส อวดดี แทนที่จะมีจิตสำนึกปรับปรุงนิสัยแก้ไขพฤติกรรม
แต่มหากปิละกลับหันมาตำหนิติด่า ไม่เว้นแม้แต่พระพี่ชาย
มหากปิละผู้ทระนงกล่าวปรามาสขึ้นว่า พวกท่านจะรู้อะไรมากเท่าเรากระนั้นหรือ เป็นแค่ภิกษุผู้ว่างเปล่า ยังจะมีหน้ามาตักเตือนเราผู้เป็นพหูสูต
แต่ด้วยความเมตตาที่พระพี่ชายมีต่อมหากปิละผู้น้อง จึงเทียวไปเทียวมาสั่งสอนตักเตือนพระน้องชายถึง ๓ ครั้ง
มหากปิละก็มิได้อาทรต่อคำตักเตือน ซ้ำยังทำตัวเหิมเกริม ดูแคลนต่อความหวังดีของพระพี่ชายผู้เป็นอรหันต์
พระโสธนะเถระจึงได้กล่าวขึ้นว่า นี่แน่ะภิกษุ เธอไม่ฟังคำสุภาษิตของเรา กลับใช้ถ้อยคำทุพภาษิตมารุกไล่เราเช่นนี้ ถ้าเช่นนั้นเธอจงรับกรรมที่เธอได้กระทำไว้ต่อไปเถิด เราคงช่วยอะไรเธอไม่ได้แล้วล่ะ
พระโสธนะเถระอรหันต์ผู้พี่ จึงได้หลีกกลับเข้าไปอยู่ในป่าดังเดิม
กาลต่อมา หมู่ภิกษุผู้มีศีลสังวร เมื่อเห็นว่าภิกษุกปิละเป็นผู้เก้อยาก หัวดื้อ หัวรั้น ว่ากล่าวตักเตือนด้วยความหวังดี กลับไม่ยอมฟัง แถมยังมีวาจาทุพภาษิต ด่ากราดเอาแก่บรรดาภิกษุผู้มีศีลสังวรกลับมาอีก
ภิกษุเหล่านั้นจึงพากันวางเฉย ปฏิเสธที่จะคบค้าสมาคมด้วย
อยู่มาวันหนึ่ง มหากปิละต้องการจะแสดงความรู้ของตนอวดภิกษุด้วยกัน จึงถือพัดไปนั่งบนธรรมาสน์ในโรงพระอุโบสถ แล้วกล่าวแก่บรรดาภิกษุผู้ประชุมกันอยู่ ณ ที่นั้นว่า ผู้มีอายุเราจักแสดงปาฏิโมกข์ให้พวกท่านทั้งหลายได้สดับ ท่านทั้งหลายพร้อมที่จะรับฟังปาฏิโมกข์ของเราหรือไม่
บรรดาภิกษุทั้งหลายต่างพากันนิ่งเฉย ด้วยคิดว่า ไม่มีประโยชน์ที่เราจักไปพูดคุยกับภิกษุผู้เก้อยาก (หน้าด้าน)
มหากปิละจึงแสดงความไม่พอใจกล่าววาจาทุพภาษิตขึ้นว่า เมื่อพวกท่านพากันนิ่งเฉยเช่นนี้ เราก็ไม่เห็นประโยชน์อันใดที่จะแสดงปาฏิโมกข์ให้พวกท่านฟัง
เพราะธรรมก็ดี วินัยก็ดี มันไม่มีอยู่จริงดอกในยุคนี้ (เขาหมายถึงหลังจากพระพุทธเจ้านิพพานแล้ว)
กล่าวเช่นนี้แล้ว มหากปิละผู้หยาบช้า ก็ลุกออกไปจากธรรมาสน์ด้วยกิริยาที่แสดงความไม่ชอบใจ
เมื่อภิกษุมหากปิละได้กล่าววาจาจาบจ้วงต่อพระธรรมวินัยของพระบรมศาสดาอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า นามว่า พระกัสสปพุทธเจ้า ในวันนั้นแล้ว ก็หาได้เข้าร่วมสังฆกรรมใดๆ แก่หมู่ภิกษุผู้ทรงศีลสังวรอีกเลยไม่
เอาแต่ตระเวนเทศน์สั่งสอนชาวบ้านที่ไม่รู้หลักธรรม หลักวินัย ให้หลงเชื่อผิดๆ เพื่อต้องการลาภสักการะ และบริวารเท่านั้น หาได้ปฏิบัติตามธุระที่มีในพระพุทธศาสนาไม่
จวบจนถึงวันตาย จึงไปบังเกิดในอเวจีมหานรกอยู่สิ้นพุทธันดร เมื่อพ้นจากนรกนั้นแล้ว จึงมาเกิดเป็นปลาสีทอง แต่ก็มีกลิ่นปากเหม็นดังซากศพ ด้วยโทษที่กล่าววาจาทุพภาษิต ใช้วาจารุกไล่ จาบจ้วง ภิกษุผู้ทรงศีลสังวร และด่าว่าพระอรหันต์พี่ชายผู้มีใจกรุณา
ผลกรรมชั่วดังกล่าว จึงทำให้มีกลิ่นปากเหม็นตลบอบอวลไปไกล
ส่วนที่เกิดเป็นปลาสีทองสวยงาม ก็ด้วยอานิสงส์ที่เมื่อบวชช่วงแรกๆ ได้ตั้งใจปฏิบัติรับใช้พระอุปัชฌาย์อยู่ตลอด ๕ ปี ด้วยความศรัทธา จึงมีรูปกายสีทองสวยงาม
ส่วนพระโสธนะเถระอรหันต์ผู้พี่ชาย เมื่อสิ้นอายุขัยก็ลุถึงนิพพานในเวลาต่อมา
องค์สมเด็จพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้า ครั้งทรงแสดงอดีตชาติของปลาทองปากเหม็นให้เป็นที่ประจักษ์ จึงทรงตรัสถามปลาทองไปว่า เดรัจฉาน เจ้ารู้หรือไม่ว่าเจ้ามาจากไหน
ปลาสีทองจึงตอบว่า ข้าพระพุทธเจ้ามาจากอเวจีมหานรกพระพุทธเจ้าข้า
พระบรมศาสดาจึงตรัสถามต่อไปว่า แล้วเจ้าจะไปไหน
ปลาสีทองจึงทูลว่า ไปนรกพระพุทธเจ้าข้า
พระบรมศาสดาจึงทรงตรัสถามต่อว่า ด้วยเหตุใดหรือ
ปลาทองทูลตอบว่า ด้วยเหตุเพราะ ทำให้พระธรรมคำสั่งสอนของพระบรมศาสดาเสื่อม ด้วยการกล่าววาจาทุพภาษิตและบิดเบือนพระธรรมวินัยพระพุทธเจ้าข้า
ปลาทองทูลดังนี้แล้ว จึงสะบัดลำตัวเอาหัวฟาดกับกาบเรือของพระราชา จนตายไปเกิดใช้กรรมในนรกสืบไปจนถึงทุกวันนี้

The golden fish with bad breath (Part III)

Even monks with precepts observation and Phra Sothana monk, as an Arhant, came to warn Phra Kapila monk who was arrogant, proud, and insolent. Phra Kapila monk, instead of improving his behaviors, on the other hand, Phra Kapila monk criticized them including his brother.
The haughty Phra Kapila monk affronted them by saying that, “Do you know more than me? You are still empty monks. How dare you warn me who is a scholar?
Because of his mercy for his younger brother, Phra Sothana monk came back to warm Phra Kapila monk for three times.
Phra Kapila monk did not care about that warning, but he looked down upon his Arhant elder brother monk’s good intention.
So, Phra Sothana monk said that, Bhikku, you did not listen to my moral speech, but attacked me with immoral speech. Consequently, you would have to receive outcomes of your deeds and I will not be able to help you.
Then, Phra Sothana Arahant went back to live in the woods.
Later, when monks with precepts observation saw that Phra Kapila monk was shameless and stubborn. He did not listen to other people warnings with good intention. He spoke immoral words and rebuked noble monks.
Therefore, those monks ignored him and refused to interact with him.
One day, Phra Kapila monk wanted to show off his knowledge to fellow monks. So, he carried a fan and sat on pulpit in an ordination hall. He said to other monks that senior fellow monks, I would like to chant the Fundamental Precepts for your listening. Are you ready to listen to my Fundamental Precepts chanting?
Those monks ignored him and thought that it was vain for them to talk to such a shameless monk.
Therefore, Phra Kapila monk was upset and said an immoral speech, “When all of you are indifferent, I don’t see any value to chant the Fundamental Precepts for your listening.
“Because Dhamma or monastic rules does not exist in this era. (He meant after Buddha’s nirvana.)”, after saying that, the rude Phra Kapila monk showed his upset feeling and left the pulpit.
After insulting the monastic rules of the Lord Buddha Kassapa, he did not join any monastic activity with the group of monks who observed the precepts.
He traveled to teach common people who did not know about Dhamma or monastic rules and deceived them for obtaining fortune and followers. He did not practice any Buddhist duties.
After his death, he was born in abyss of hell till the end of Lord Buddha Kassapa’s era. Then, he was born as a golden fish with bad mouth like corpse due to his immoral speech towards noble monks and kind elder brother Arhant.
The sin resulted in bad mouth which stank for a very long distance.
And he was born with a beautiful golden color because of his merit from his faithful serving his preceptor for five years when he was newly ordained. So, he had a very beautiful golden body.
His elder brother Arhant achieved nirvana.
After telling story of the golden fish’s past life, Lord Buddha asked the fish, “Animal, do you know where you come from?”
The golden fish replied, “I come from the abyss of hell, sir.”
Then, Lord Buddha asked, “Where is your next destination?”
The golden fish replied, “Go to hell, sir.”
Lord Buddha asked it, “Why?”
The golden fish replied, “Because I said immoral speech to distort and undermine Lord Buddha’s teaching and monastic rule, sir.”
After its reply, the golden fish shook its body and hit its head against the King’s ship and died. Then, it was born in hell and has stayed there in torture till today.
