There are hundreds of reasons why Thais adore the monarchy (chapter 3)
January 5, 2021
The last chapter ended when the French and Vietnamese troops jointly fought against the Siamese army and forced Siam to sign the Treaty of Dien Bien Phu in 1888.
Later, France appointed Jean Marie August Pavie to be French Charge d’Affaires to Siam with a residence in Bangkok. After that, he followed his scheme to seize the land of Siam, by having the troops to pressure Siamese royal court to surrender.
When August Pavie saw that the Siamese government did not yield to the pressure, he ordered French gunboats to sail into the mouth of the Chao Phraya River at Samut Prakan seaport.
At the time, Siamese troops which protected the mouth of the Chao Phraya River tried their best to fight against the French assault but could not withstand French state-of-the-art weapons and ammunition.
When the French gunboat arrived at the Chulachomklao Fort and anchored at the opposite side of the Grand Palace, it was indeed the crisis of the Franco-Siamese War in 1893.
These incidents made His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V) worried so much although he had predicted and prepared for such incidents fourteen years before. That was why King Chulalongkorn had tried to fasten country’s development in all aspects to be among civilized countries. In 1879, the King ordered Prince Sai Sanitwongse to purchase cannons and torpedo launched below the water surface from the Great Britain to protect the Paknam seaport.
To further strengthen the seaward defense and prevent foreign warships from reaching Siamese capital city, King Chulalongkorn also expedited the construction of additional two forts for firing cannons on the two sides of Samut Prakan seaport at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. The two forts were named the Phra Chulachomklao Fort and the Phisuea Samut Fort.
Even when the two forts were under construction, King Chulalongkorn often disguised himself to inspect the construction.
The King had a determination to preserve the independence of Siam.
The King wrote a letter to Prince Pichitpreechakorn that…
“Please never doubt whether I will submit to France. Although the French put the gun against my face forcing me to sign or capture me into its boat, I will never surrender. Please have the Maha Chakri ship, the Crown Prince ship, and the Han Hak Satru ship always prepared and ready. Whenever assaults take place, we will fight to the death.”
