One of hundred reasons why Thais adore the monarchy (chapter 2)
January 4, 2021
The last chapter ended when France interfered with Siam’s military and politics, by having its military forces help Siam fight against the Haw rebels.
After Siamese army led by Field Marshal Chaophraya Surasakmontri (Jerm Sang-Chuto)’s winning over the Haw rebels, France did not withdraw its military troops out of Lan Xang, but took control over Lan Xang and entire area of Laos.
Even though Siam tried to negotiate and cited that Lan Xang had belonged to Siam since the Ayudhya era, France did not listen and claimed that Siam did not have a map to confirm its territory. Before that, Siam hired an Irish surveyor and cartographer named James Fitzroy McCarthy to work on the setting of its borders from the north downward.
Nevertheless, France claimed that the map made by the Irish surveyor contained vague information and could not be used to determine Siam’s borders.
At the time, Siam tried to fight with all its might which caused the death of twelve French soldiers. Still, Siam could not drive away French and Vietnamese soldiers out of the Lan Xang land. Siam thought that if it insisted to continuously fight against France, it will lose more people because France had superior weapons and more armed forces with Vietnamese joining. Consequently, Siam had to compromise. France, therefore, exploited its dead soldiers as an excuse to seize the land of Laos. Then, France threatened Siam to sign an agreement to cede Lan Xang to France on December 22, 1888.
In conclusion, Siam lost entire area of Lan Xang (Laos) to France due to superior joint armed forces and weapons of France and Vietnam.
Later, in 1892, France appointed Jean Marie August Pavie, who was instrumental in establishing French control over Laos, to be French resident minister in Siam. Auguste Pavie moved forward to use his cunning tactics to seize Siam.
